5 great reasons to visit Portugal
Do you know why you should visit Portugal? Here are 5 great reasons to visit this wonderful country!
We all know that Europe is packed with museums, churches, history, art, and, therefore, wonderful to get to know and explore. Even though they might all seem similar from afar, they are quite different, each one having a character of its own.
France, Italy, the UK and Spain are the most popular ones.
But, Portugal should definitely make the list of countries that you should visit, dare I say, more than once! Here are 5 great reasons to visit Portugal that will leave you wondering why you haven’t been here before!
1-Portugal is full of beautiful beaches and idyllic hiking trails
Portugal is a coastal country, so there are many beaches to choose from. The southern coast (Algarve) is much warmer, but the water is translucid throughout the whole shore. Nazaré is the land of the giant waves, where during the winter you can see surfers venturing to claim the next world record.
There are also beautiful cliffs in some of the regions like Peniche where you can marvel at the sea and try to imagine what life was like for the Portuguese who sailed across the Atlantic to new lands.
Ocean beaches are not the only option, though. If you prefer to avoid the salty sea air, there are plenty of river beaches to choose from.
If water is not your thing, you can hike the passadiços or even explore the mountains at Serra da Estrela, Lousã and Gerês.
2-It is a small country, and the major cities are just a couple of hours apart from each other
The biggest cities, Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and Braga are around 1h30 away from each other. In between them, there are many small but beautiful cities to visit, such as Évora, Óbidos, Nazaré, and Aveiro.
3- It is one of the cheapest countries in Western Europe
From hotels to car rentals, to restaurants, Portugal is much cheaper than your average western European country. This means you can stay at better hotels, eat fancier meals, or simply save more money than you would somewhere else.
4- The roads are very good and empty
The roads are flawless, and, call me lucky, but I have never been in a traffic jam traveling across Portugal. I think Portugal is one of the countries with the fewer traffic jams I have been to. There are many tolls, though. But, if that is an issue, you can choose a longer route without charges.
5-Bolinho de Bacalhau and Pastel de Natas
The food in Portugal is delicious. But, the Bolinho de bacalhau (codfish roll) and the Pastel de Natas (custard pie) are definitely the stars of the show! If nothing I said before convinced you to come to Portugal, just these two should! Look at them and you will be ready to buy your tickets!
